Description

Photographed at the Newark Air Museum on 28 September 2008.
This aircraft was built as an FAW.1 at Christchurch, Hants, and was allocated to 890 Sqn at RNAS Yeovilton on 23 February 1960. Embarked on HMS Hermes. After a brief period at the Royal Navy Aircraft Yard at Sydenham, N.I., allocated to de Havilland at Hatfield for towed target system trials. Detached in 1962 to the RAE Handling School at Boscombe Down. In 1964 converted to FAW.2 standard at RNAY Sydenham and joined 892 Sqn in 1966. After serving in the Far East, 892 Sqn was disbanded in October 1968 and XJ560 transferred to 893 Sqn. On their disbandment on 9 July 1970, transferred to RNAY Sydenham (again!).
On 3 June 1971 delivered to RAF Abingdon before allocation as instructional airframe 8142M to No. 1 School of Technical Training. Moved to RAE Farnborough in April 1977, and in 1977 to RAE Bedford for barrier trials. Withdrawn from use in 1983 and acquired by the museum in October 1985.
